Muscat – More than 110 volunteers came together as ‘one family’ to clean the Bausher sands, in one of Muscat’s largest community-driven environmental campaigns this year. The initiative, led by the Oman Mountains Heroes Team in partnership with Centara Hotel Muscat, aimed to raise public awareness on the importance of protecting Oman’s natural landscapes – especially areas that attract hikers, families and desert explorers.
Volunteer Hussain al Hasani said the team, established in 2021 and affiliated with the Oman Club in Bausher, was founded with the dual mission of promoting physical activity and encouraging appreciation for Muscat’s diverse natural sites. With nearly 390 members spanning different age groups, the team has become one of the most active community-based environmental groups in the governorate.
Hasani noted that the Bausher clean-up campaign reflects the team’s growing sense of responsibility toward Oman’s environment. “Protecting natural sites is not only about enjoying them; it is about ensuring they remain clean and beautiful for future generations,” he said.
The volunteers — comprising team members and employees from Centara Hotel — collected litter scattered across the dunes, ultimately filling more than 50 bags with waste. The effort restored what many described as the “civilised and natural appearance” of the area.
Hasani added that the cooperation between the hospitality sector and community-based teams signals a positive shift in the national approach to environmental stewardship. “This initiative sends a clear message: preserving the environment is a shared duty that involves institutions, companies, volunteer groups and individuals,” he said.
He added that this campaign is part of a broader programme of initiatives planned across various governorates. The team believes that Oman’s environment – from mountains and wadis to deserts and coastlines – deserves constant care and attention.
The event concluded with renewed calls to institutionalise environmental volunteerism and encourage private-sector partnerships, supporting a national vision that aims to keep Oman clean, sustainable and naturally beautiful.
