Muscat – The second edition of the National Reading Competition will be held as part of the 30th Muscat International Book Fair scheduled from March 26 to April 5 in a continued push to encourage reading habits among school students.
Organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth (MCSY), the initiative supports efforts to promote reading as a pillar of knowledge and cultural development in Oman. It will be delivered in coordination with the Ministry of Education and is part of nationwide activities aimed at improving students’ language, comprehension and critical thinking skills.
Mohammed bin Marhoon Al Maktoumi, Director of the Youth Initiatives Department at MCSY, said the competition is designed as an annual national project that includes interactive reading programmes and staged evaluations. The contest is open to students across the sultanate and is conducted in three phases during the school year.
Figures from the first edition showed 1,345 students took part, with 411 qualifying at governorates level. Forty-four advanced to the national stage, where 12 students were recognised in the final round. Results of the second edition will be announced during the 2026 fair.
Several community initiatives continue to complement the national drive. The ‘My Wilayat Reads’ activity has been held in Suhar, Saham and Khaboura, while the ‘Reading Paradise’ initiative in Samad Al Shan provides access to books for children and teenagers. Another project – Green Thought – promotes small libraries in public parks to encourage reading in informal settings.
