Muscat – Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has issued a weather alert for heavy rainfall, commencing at 12:00 AM on Tuesday and expected to conclude at 12:00 AM on Wednesday. The alert warns of expected heavy thunderstorms across the Musandam governorate, accompanied by strong downdraft winds.
Anticipated rainfall amounts are projected to range from 20 to 60 mm, which is likely to result in flash floods in wadis and low-lying areas. The strong downdraft active winds are expected to reach speeds between 15 and 35 knots (28–64 km/h). Furthermore, the sea state is predicted to rise significantly along the Musandam governorate and Oman Sea coasts, with waves reaching 1.5 to 2.0 metres. The storms are also expected to cause a reduction in horizontal visibility.
Beyond Musandam, there is a chance of isolated rain with thunderstorms over the governorates ofBuraimi, North Batinah, South Batinah, and parts of the Al Hajar mountains, which may also lead to localised flash floods.
The CAA’s National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Center advises all residents and visitors to take the necessary precautions during the thunder shower. Crucially, the public is urged not to cross wadis (flash floods), to avoid low-lying areas, and to refrain from sailing during the alert period.
