Salalah – A four-day workshop that concluded on Wednesday in Dhofar has outlined a new roadmap for the conservation of the endangered Arabian leopard, setting priorities for Oman’s national and regional efforts through 2030.
Organised by the Environment Authority (EA), the workshop brought together representatives from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Arabian Leopard Fund, the Royal Commission for AlUla in Saudi Arabia and Oman’s Arabian Leopard Conservation Team.
Organised by the Directorate General of Environment in Dhofar, the workshop assessed progress made under the 2014–2025 Arabian Leopard Conservation Strategy and to define the next phase of action.
Among the key recommendations was the establishment of a dedicated research centre in Dhofar to serve as a scientific hub for studies, field monitoring, and habitat management related to the Arabian leopard.
Participants also called for the formation of a national committee, led by the Environment Authority and comprising representatives from relevant government institutions, to oversee the implementation of the updated strategy and ensure effective coordination among stakeholders.
The workshop recommended updating environmental legislation to strengthen protection for the Arabian leopard and its prey species, expanding the network of nature reserves across the sultanate, and developing national expertise in partnership with the Arabian Leopard Fund in Saudi Arabia and IUCN.
The event featured scientific discussions and brainstorming sessions addressing key environmental challenges, conservation practices, and sustainable habitat management.
The programme concluded with a field visit to Jabal Samhan Nature Reserve, where participants witnessed ongoing efforts under the Arabian Leopard Conservation Project.
