Muscat – Environment Authority (EA) has launched a nationwide study to assess the quality of treated wastewater from sewage and industrial plants across the sultanate, as part of its ongoing efforts to promote sustainable water management and encourage the safe reuse of treated water.
Imran bin Mohammed al Kumzari, Director of the Environmental Quality Department at EA, said the study is being undertaken in response to the growing challenges posed by water scarcity and the country’s increasing dependence on desalinated and limited groundwater resources.
He noted that sewage and industrial wastewater treatment plants play a crucial role in Oman’s water management strategy by enabling water reuse and reducing pressure on natural resources.

“The project focuses on analysing treated wastewater quality at several key locations across the sultanate,” Kumzari said. “Comprehensive field data will be collected, along with laboratory testing of various physical, chemical and biological indicators, including pH levels, suspended solids, dissolved oxygen, organic and inorganic pollutants, and heavy metals.”
The national survey will cover 217 sewage and industrial wastewater treatment plants distributed across all 11 governorates. Conducted over two years, the project involves detailed field visits and water sampling under strict scientific protocols to ensure accuracy and reliability of results.
According to Kumzari, the study will help establish a comprehensive national database on the quality of treated wastewater in the country. The findings are expected to support improved environmental planning, strengthen water sustainability initiatives, and guide future policies that balance development needs with the protection of Oman’s natural resources.
“This effort reflects EA’s commitment to promoting the efficient use of treated water for safe, environmentally sound applications,” he added.
