Muscat – The Environment Authority (EA) has called on all environmentally licensed companies and establishments in Oman to update their environmental emergency response plans and submit supporting documentation, in line with the Law on the Protection of the Environment and Combating Pollution issued by Royal Decree No 114/2001.
In a notice issued this week, the authority said the measure is aimed at boosting national preparedness and ensuring swift and effective responses to environmental incidents, particularly oil and chemical spills.
The EA asked companies to submit the required documents to the Environmental Emergency Centre at its headquarters or via email at mail@ea.gov.om
Required submissions include a company profile outlining its capabilities in handling oil and chemical spill incidents and the best practices it follows, as well as a copy of its commercial registration.
Firms are also required to provide Tier 1 and Tier 2 oil spill response plans, with detailed lists of response equipment and materials and where these are located. Information on chemical dispersants registered with the Environmental Emergency Centre must also be included.
The authority further requested details of specialised personnel in oil spill response, emergency contact numbers and any contracted service providers. Copies of relevant certifications – such as ISO 9001 for quality management and ISO 14001 for environmental management – are also required, along with lists of safety and rescue equipment used in responding to chemical pollution incidents.
The EA stated that the measure is in line with Oman’s 2023 National Oil Spill Contingency Plan and reflects ongoing efforts to enhance environmental protection and pollution response readiness across the sultanate.
