Muscat – A group of hikers from Al Awabi in South Batinah completed a 65km mountain trek on November 24 to mark National Day, carrying the national flag throughout the journey in a display of pride and endurance.
Participants included Sami Ali al Bahri, Majdi Salim al Bahri, Amir Saeed al Bahri and Mazen al Yaarubi, led by Hamdan Abdullah al Riyami, head of the Sanaa Hiking Team.
Speaking to Muscat Daily, Riyami said, “The trek began at 3am from the Jalab Farm in Wadi Bani Kharous and ended at Nakhal Fort at 6pm, after more than 16 hours of continuous walking across rugged, steep, and varied terrain.”
He said the team spent three months preparing for the journey, studying the route and monitoring weather conditions to ensure a safe and well-planned trek. The hikers carried essential supplies, including water, juices and light snacks, to maintain energy levels along the demanding route.
Riyami noted that the toughest sections were the long uphill climbs towards the mountain peaks, which required significant physical effort and steady pacing. The team took only two short breaks to perform prayers and have a light meal.
He said raising the Omani flag at the mountain peaks was the most memorable moment, symbolising their pride in the nation and marking 281 years since the establishment of the Al Busaidi dynasty.
He added that the trek served not only as a National Day tribute but also as an opportunity to highlight the natural beauty of Al Awabi’s and Nakhal’s mountain trails, and to promote hiking as a way to connect with Oman’s landscapes.
Established in 2023, the Sanaa Hiking Team has organised several treks within Al Awabi. Riyami said the group aims to expand its activities by introducing new trails and adventure events in the coming months, noting that mountain hiking fosters environmental awareness, sustainable tourism and healthier lifestyles.
He expressed his gratitude to the residents of Al Awabi and all volunteers who supported the event, emphasising that the successful completion of the trek reflects strong community cooperation, dedication and the resilience of the participants.
