Rakhyut – The Environment Authority (EA) in Dhofar has launched a new conservation initiative aimed at reviving one of Oman’s rarest native plants by setting up ‘Al Areib Tree Garden’ in its natural habitat in the Shath area of Rakhyut. The project is part of ongoing national efforts to safeguard biodiversity and protect endangered plant species.
The initiative focuses on the restoration and propagation of Dracaena serrulata, known locally as the Areib tree – an evergreen, slow-growing and rare species listed on the IUCN Red List as endangered. The plant is found in southern Oman, particularly in the Dhofar mountain range, as well as in parts of Yemen and Saudi Arabia. It is known for its resilience to drought, its ability to stabilise soil and combat desertification, and for the traditional use of its fibres in making ropes and tools.
Hatem al Mahri, head of Biodiversity Department in the Directorate General of Environment in Dhofar, said establishment of the garden marks a significant milestone in the authority’s efforts to preserve threatened plant species. He explained that the project includes securing seeds, cuttings and seedlings for reintroducing the species in its natural habitats, in addition to designating a site for scientific studies and research. EA is also exploring modern propagation methods, including tissue culture techniques, to enhance cultivation programmes.
Mahri added that the project will help raise community awareness on the importance of preserving rare plant species by engaging local communities in propagation and replanting efforts. He noted that the new site will serve as an added environmental and tourism asset, further enriching the unique natural character of Rakhyut.
