Muscat – Oman marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with a two-day ‘Village of Happiness’ carnival at Civil Aviation Club starting on Friday, an initiative aimed at promoting inclusion, empowerment and community participation for children with disabilities.

The event was held under the patronage of Dr Khamis bin Saif bin Hamoud al Jabri, Chairman of Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-Up Unit, and organised by H H Sayyida Hujaija bint Jaifar al Said.

Organisers said the carnival aligned with Vision 2040, particularly the Human and Society pillar, which focuses on building an inclusive society and enabling persons with disabilities to participate actively in social, economic and cultural life. The initiative also supported national efforts to enhance quality of life and ensure equal opportunities across society.

Designed as an inclusive entertainment, educational and awareness platform, the carnival offered a wide range of free activities in an accessible environment. The programme aimed to highlight the talents and capabilities of persons with disabilities while fostering understanding and social integration.

More than 2,000 children with disabilities and their families took part over the two days, representing civil associations as well as government and private centres. Children from resident communities, including Indian and Pakistani schools, also participated, reflecting Oman’s emphasis on coexistence and inclusiveness.

Participants engaged in more than 30 activities, including educational sessions such as science labs, board games, arts and crafts, and pottery. Recreational events included adapted classic car and motorcycle rides, magic performances, horse riding, animal interaction zones, face painting, henna art, circus shows and appearances by cartoon characters, all designed to meet diverse accessibility needs.

The carnival also supported small and medium enterprises in the children’s entertainment sector. Entrepreneurs with disabilities were given space to showcase and sell their products, contributing to economic empowerment and financial independence in line with Vision 2040’s entrepreneurship goals. Food and beverage outlets provided complimentary items, reinforcing community solidarity.
