Muscat – CM Velavaa Ragavesh, a grade 11 student of Indian School Al Seeb (ISAS), has added another accolade to his growing chess résumé after winning a team gold medal at the 69th SGFI National School Games Chess Championship 2025–26, held in Bengaluru, India from December 5 to 7.
Competing as part of the CBSE team at one of India’s most competitive school-level tournaments, Ragavesh also secured a bronze medal for his individual performance, finishing among the most consistent players in his category. The SGFI championship brings together leading school players from across Indian states and educational boards and is widely regarded as a key platform for emerging talent.
Reflecting on the achievement, Ragavesh said the experience tested both preparation and composure. “The level of competition was very high, and every round demanded full concentration,” he said. “Winning gold with the team was special because it reflected collective effort, not just individual results.”
Awarded the FIDE Candidate Master title in 2024, Ragavesh has built a steady record at international, national and regional events. His achievements include podium finishes at Western Asian, Asian and Commonwealth championships, as well as at World Amateur tournaments. In India, he has performed well in CBSE national competitions, while in Oman he has secured multiple titles and top finishes in local events.
Balancing academics with competitive chess remains a priority. “Time management is crucial,” he said.
ISAS has played a central role in supporting his development. The school community has praised him as an example for students aiming to excel in both academics and sport. Ragavesh acknowledged the support of Principal Dr Alex C Joseph and sports coordinators for enabling participation in major events.
Ragavesh and his family also thanked the Oman Chess Committee and local organisers for regular tournaments that offer competitive exposure. Looking ahead, Ragavesh has set his sights on earning the Grandmaster title within the next three years. “I know the path is demanding,” he said, “but with stronger tournaments, advanced coaching and support, I hope to take the next step and represent my school and Oman at a higher level.”
