Muscat – Marine sports in Oman are poised for a strong year in 2026, with plans for 20 championships and events and a target of more than 1,500 participants by year-end, according to the Oman Maritime Sports Committee.
Sheikh Ali bin Saeed Bait Fadhil, Chairman of the committee, said the body plays a comprehensive organisational and technical role, covering strategy development, event management, personnel training and oversight of international participation.
He noted that the committee already delivers more than 15 programmes annually, including local championships, training camps and community initiatives, drawing over 1,200 male and female athletes from various coastal governorates.
Participation in maritime sports has grown by about 40% over the past three years, particularly among youth. Fadhil attributed this to expanded awareness campaigns, the inclusion of marine activities in national and community events, and partnerships with more than 12 clubs and educational institutions that have incorporated these sports into their annual plans.
He said Oman’s diverse marine environment and favourable climate allow year-round training and competition, helping the country host regional championships and attract international participants in recent years.
On performance, Fadhil added that national teams have secured more than 10 medals and high rankings in Gulf and Asian competitions over the past two years, reflecting an improved technical standard. This progress follows intensive preparation, including eight domestic and overseas training camps and the use of international expertise in coaching and officiating.
Last season alone saw around 18 marine championships and events involving more than 35 teams and clubs, alongside a notable expansion in age-group categories, signalling a broader participation base and effective talent recruitment.
Despite this progress, Fadhil acknowledged challenges, including limited resources at certain stages and the need for more specialised technical personnel. He said these have been addressed through stronger partnerships with public and private entities, streamlined spending and phased development plans to ensure sustainability.
Looking ahead, the committee plans at least 20 championships and events this year, including two new competitions for under-16 and under-18 athletes. It also aims to deliver 10 technical and refereeing courses to train more than 60 Omani coaches and officials to international standards.
Talent identification remains a priority, with selection programmes across coastal governorates and efforts to activate water sports in at least 15 clubs in coordination with the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth.
He stressed that marine sports investment is a promising field for Oman, given its natural assets and strategic location, which can help boost sports tourism and related economic activity.
