Bidiyah – Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) is implementing several restoration and maintenance works targeting key historical landmarks in North Sharqiyah, as part of its efforts to safeguard Oman’s architectural heritage.
Sumaiya Hamad al Busaidi, Director of Heritage and Tourism Department in the governorate, confirmed that work is currently under way at Al Muntarib and Al Wasl forts in Bidiyah.
Several traditional gates, known locally as darawiz, are also being restored across various heritage sites and villages. These include the darwaza of Al Wali Mosque in Harat al Manzifa, Al Nasib Darwaza in Al Nasib village in Ibra, and the darwaza of Al Hijra in Al Sharia village in the niyabat of Samad al Shaan, Mudhaibi.
Sumaiya informed that prior to initiating restoration works, MHT conducted laboratory studies to assess the structural condition of the forts and identify areas requiring reinforcement. Based on these findings, a comprehensive work plan was developed taking into account the architectural and historical significance of the sites.

Work officially began in February and is progressing according to an approved schedule. The project includes cleaning, structural reinforcement and removal of worn plaster from exterior walls, alongside detailed restoration of rooms, inner courtyards, lighting systems, decorative elements and preparation of services such as air conditioning systems.
MHT is ensuring that the original architectural identity of these sites are preserved by employing traditional construction materials including mud, sarouj (lime-based plaster), natural stone, kundal (mangrove wood) and teak.
Sumaiya noted that these materials are integral to the authenticity of the sites; use of these reinforces the historical character of Oman’s architectural heritage.
