Muscat – Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has signed a strategic partnership with the Ironman Group to consolidate Oman’s position as a global destination for adventure tourism and sporting events.
Under the agreement, Muscat will host the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in 2029, becoming the first city in the Middle East to stage the event. This will also mark the first time in the Ironman brand’s nearly 50-year history that a world championship race is held in the region. Muscat will join cities such as Nice, St George and Taupō, which have previously hosted the championship.
Scott DeRue, CEO of Ironman Group, said the Ironman 70.3 World Championship is the pinnacle of middle-distance triathlon and draws interest from host cities worldwide. “We are confident Muscat will deliver a race experience that inspires our global community of more than 6,000 World Championship athletes to perform at their very best,” he said.
Under the partnership, Oman will also host the region’s first full-distance Ironman race annually starting in December 2026 with the Experience Oman platform becoming the global premier partner of the Ironman Global Series through 2030.
H E Azzan bin Qasim al Busaidi, Undersecretary for Tourism, said the Ironman championships play a pivotal role in placing Oman on the global sports tourism map. “Hosting international championships reflects the sultanate’s readiness to host major events, diversifying tourism patterns and attracting new categories of visitors from around the world,” he said.
He added that the partnership is a strategic opportunity to highlight Oman’s tourism assets, promote investment opportunities in the sector, and increase tourist flow, particularly from Europe, enhancing the industry’s contribution to the national economy.
Oman entered the international triathlon scene in 2018 with a 5150 race in Muscat. The Ironman 70.3 Muscat triathlon followed in 2019, marking the country’s official entry into the global series. Salalah hosted its first Ironman 70.3 in September 2022 and has held three successful editions, with the next race scheduled for October 25, 2025.
