Muscat – Muscat Municipality has issued a set of health and regulatory guidelines for the sale of honey, underscoring the importance of compliance to ensure product safety, quality and the protection of public health.

In a statement, the municipality said the guidelines aim to regulate honey sales across markets and public spaces, while enhancing consumer confidence and ensuring hygienic handling and display practices.

According to the guidelines, honey sales points must be located at least 100m away from government buildings, residential areas and hospitals. The municipality stressed that honey should be displayed only on clean tables or carts, and must not be left uncovered or exposed to direct sunlight.

The guidelines also require honey to be packed in sterile, clean, dry and tightly sealed containers, noting that the reuse of bottles is strictly prohibited. Each container must carry a clear label indicating the type of honey, source, production date and place, as well as net weight.

Muscat Municipality further emphasised that all honey products offered for sale must comply with Gulf Standard GSO 147:2008, which sets quality and safety specifications for honey in the region.

The municipality called on honey sellers to adhere fully to these requirements, warning that inspections will be carried out and legal action taken against violators, as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard public health and regulate food-related activities within the governorate.
