Muscat – National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) has announced its plan to launch the world’s first ‘Household Expenditure and Income Survey’ using artificial intelligence this year, with results to be published in 2026.

Dr Khalifa bin Abdullah al Barwani, CEO of NCSI, said the project reflects the centre’s strategy to employ advanced technologies in statistical work to improve data quality and support national decision-making.
“Statistical work in Oman has become a fundamental pillar in supporting policy-making, based on accurate and reliable data that keeps pace with rapid economic and social changes,” Barwani pointed out, stressing that artificial intelligence is now central to the centre’s operations, enabling faster surveys and more effective analysis.
“This contributes to raising the quality of outputs and supporting sustainable development efforts,” he noted.
NCSI is also working on its ‘Smart Statistics’ data warehouse project, which will use the latest technologies to enhance the efficiency of data storage and analysis. Barwani said the centre now relies on national records for more than 95% of its surveys, a practice that began with the 2020 census, marking a turning point in statistical work in the sultanate.
Barwani highlighted that Oman ranked ninth globally this year for data openness and accessibility, ahead of many countries. He expressed confidence that the sultanate could advance to the top five globally by 2026.
He also noted that the memorandum of understanding signed recently with the General Authority for Statistics in Saudi Arabia will open new avenues for Gulf statistical cooperation.
