Muscat – Seeking to unlock new economic value from the nation’s water infrastructure, the Ministry of Agricultural, Fisheries Wealth and Water Resources has begun exploring ways to transform dam sites and reservoir systems into productive investment zones.
As part of this effort, the ministry has launched an international tender for a study to assess the economic and social feasibility of developing tourism, agricultural, energy and other commercial activities around dam locations across the sultanate.
Tender No 575/2025 invites specialised consultancy firms to assess how dams can be utilised for viable commercial, environmental and community projects. The study aims to identify investment opportunities that support national development while preserving natural resources.
The scope includes evaluating potential tourism activities such as resorts, cafés, camping areas and recreational facilities around dams and reservoirs. Consultants will also assess agricultural opportunities, including planting fruit trees along dam banks and utilising fertile land created by water retention.
Other areas to be examined include mining silt and stones deposited in dam lakes, using surface and groundwater for bottled water projects, and exploring renewable energy options.
The ministry said the study will draw on international best practices and successful models in other countries to determine which activities can be implemented in Oman, based on environmental suitability and economic return.
The deadline for bid submission is November 16, 2025, with opening of bids scheduled the same day. The study is expected to support the ministry’s efforts to enhance water resource utilisation, promote sustainable investment and generate economic and social benefits for surrounding communities.
