Muscat – Oman has launched the first regional project of its kind: a mobile veterinary clinic dedicated to protecting the endangered Arabian leopard in Dhofar governorate. Equipped with advanced medical tools and staffed by a specialised veterinary team, the unit is capable of rapid field intervention and will also train local cadres in wildlife handling.
The initiative, supported by the Arabian Leopard Fund in collaboration with the Environment Authority, underscores Oman’s decades-long commitment to conserving the Arabian leopard and its fragile ecosystem. Officials highlighted that Dhofar remains one of the last habitats of the species, classified as critically endangered by the IUCN, with fewer than 120 individuals believed to remain in the wild.
The project reflects regional cooperation, with Saudi Arabia’s ambassador in Muscat affirming the shared commitment to conservation and community engagement. The clinic is expected to play a vital role in research, emergency care, and raising awareness about coexistence with this rare predator.
