Oman, Qatar step up trade and investment cooperation

Doha – An Omani delegation headed by H E Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, paid an official visit to Qatar on Saturday to strengthen bilateral relations and explore opportunities for economic partnership and integration with that Gulf country.

The delegation included officials from the Oman Investment Authority, the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and a number of Omani businessmen.

During the visit, H E Yousef and his delegation met Mohammed Saif al Sowaidi, CEO of the Qatar Investment Authority, to discuss cooperation in sectors including mining, tourism and industry. They also reviewed Omani investment opportunities in energy, logistics, food security and technology, and stressed the need for effective channels between the public and private sectors to accelerate investment.

At a meeting with Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al Thani, Chairman of the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the delegation discussed strengthening trade partnerships through joint trade fairs, activating the Omani-Qatari Joint Business Council, and setting up joint companies to increase trade exchange.

The delegation also met Sheikh Faisal bin Thani al Thani, Qatari Minister of Commerce and Industry, to discuss enhancing cooperation in green hydrogen, petrochemicals and the food industry, as well as support for small and medium enterprises and sharing expertise in investment promotion and export development. Both sides agreed to explore opportunities for industrial integration and develop joint promotional programmes for Omani and Qatari products in international markets.

In talks with Saad bin Ali al Kharji, Chairman of the Qatar Tourism Authority, the Omani delegation discussed promoting tourism cooperation through exhibitions, sharing expertise in tourism development and launching joint initiatives such as cruises and festivals in Musandam, Salalah and Doha.

H E Yousef also met Abdullah bin Hamad al Attiya, Qatari Minister of Municipality, to discuss boosting Omani exports of agricultural and fishery products and building materials, and addressing challenges faced by Omani companies in the sector. At the Free Zones Authority, he discussed integration between Omani ports and Qatari free zones to facilitate trade and exchange expertise in managing and operating these zones.

The visit included field trips to Qatar Science and Technology Park to study business incubators and the country’s experience in supporting technology start-ups. The delegation also visited the Investment and Trade Court to review Qatar’s mechanism for resolving commercial and investment disputes.

On the sidelines, the delegation held meetings with the Qatari Businessmen Association and leading private sector groups including Alfardan Group, UCC Group, Investment Holding Group, Al Mana Company and Bin Sheikh Group, focusing on cooperation in tourism, financial services, real estate and technology.

H E Yousef said the meetings reflected the commitment of both leaderships to strengthening economic and investment relations.
