London – Oman has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Board of Trustees of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in the United Kingdom to advance joint scientific research on Omani plant species, expand biodiversity documentation and support specialised training programmes in plant conservation.
The agreement was signed by H E Azzan bin Qasim al Busaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Tourism, and Richard Deverell, Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
The MoU renews and expands more than a decade of cooperation between the Oman Botanic Garden and Kew Gardens in areas including scientific research, seed collection, and biodiversity preservation. The partnership aims to support knowledge exchange and strengthen national expertise in environmental education and conservation according to international standards.
The agreement will remain valid for three years and may be renewed with the consent of both parties, ensuring long-term collaboration and continued transfer of scientific expertise between Oman and the UK.
Dr Laila bint Said al Harthy, Head of the Plant Diversity and Nature Conservation Centre at the Oman Botanic Garden, said the memorandum reflects “an inspiring model of international cooperation in plant conservation and scientific research”. She noted that the extended partnership will strengthen efforts to protect Oman’s plant heritage and reinforce the country’s role as a regional centre for plant research, contributing to global biodiversity protection.
Deverell said the MoU will further deepen cooperation with the Oman Botanic Garden and support joint initiatives to protect plant life in Oman, while helping inspire future generations to value and preserve nature.
