Muscat – An Omani student-led initiative incubated at Sultan Qaboos University has developed one of the country’s first plant-based meat alternatives, aiming to provide a healthier and environmentally sustainable food option.
The project, known as Nabatenio, is being nurtured under the Scientific Incubator Programme at SQU and funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. It has developed a 100% plant-derived artificial meat enhanced with natural ingredients that raise its nutritional value.
Founder Deena Said al Kalbani has led both the scientific and entrepreneurial aspects of the project. “Our goal is to create a fully plant-based substitute to traditional animal meat that meets consumer expectations in taste, texture and nutrition,” she said.
The project began with a scientific study to assess consumer attitudes towards plant-based meat. This was followed by extensive experimentation with ingredients and formulations to ensure the final product matches local dietary preferences.
Nabatenio aims to support national food security and sustainability goals by introducing alternatives that reduce health risks associated with animal meat, lower environmental impact, diversify food choices in the local market and position Oman as a contributor to food innovation.
The product is free of cholesterol, preservatives and artificial colouring. It offers desirable sensory attributes including texture, flavour, aroma and colour, and provides nutritional levels comparable to conventional meat, making it suitable for different dietary needs.
Following successful testing and development stages, the product is ready for commercial launch. With rising consumer demand for sustainable and health-focused foods, Nabatenio is poised to enter both local and regional markets.
