Muscat – The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) signed an agreement on Tuesday with Bait al Ghasham Trading Company to manage and operate Barka Fort, one of the most prominent historical landmarks in South Batinah.
Known for its strategic location and distinctive architecture, Barka Fort is a major attraction for tourists and photographers. Some historians attribute its construction to the Yaruba dynasty (1646-1741), while others believe it was built during the reign of Imam Ahmad bin Said (1749–1783).
The agreement was signed by H E Ibrahim Said al Kharusi, Undersecretary for Heritage in MHT, and a representative of Bait al Ghasham Trading Company. It forms part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to position heritage as a driver of economic growth and sustainable tourism.
According to the ministry, the agreement marks a strategic step to engage the private sector in the preservation and activation of heritage sites. It will open new opportunities for tourism services, cultural events, handicrafts and entertainment activities.
Once operational, Barka Fort will be managed according to modern hospitality and heritage standards. The project is expected to increase tourism spending, create jobs across several sectors and support entrepreneurs in hospitality and related industries.
