Muscat – Oman has launched the second phase of its Street View project on Google Maps, expanding digital coverage across all governorates of the Sultanate, officials said on Tuesday.

The project is being implemented by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology in cooperation with the National Survey and Geospatial Information Authority and Google. It allows users inside and outside the country to explore Oman’s landscapes, heritage sites and infrastructure through 360-degree panoramic images available on Google Maps.

Officials said the latest rollout supports efforts to strengthen Oman’s digital presence, improve access to locations across the Sultanate and generate positive impacts on key sectors, particularly tourism and service-related activities.

The second phase extends coverage from Musandam in the north to Dhofar in the south, adding new routes and landmarks that were not included in the first phase. The expansion, scheduled for completion during 2025, targets a total distance of 27,000km. Images were captured using Google’s Trekker devices.

The ministry said the project reflects Oman’s commitment to innovation and digital accessibility, while reinforcing its position as a destination with diverse cultural and natural assets. Users can access the imagery by enabling the Street View option within the Google Maps application.

The first phase of the project covered selected locations, including Khor Rori, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and extended to about 36,000km. With the completion of the second phase, total Street View coverage in Oman has reached approximately 63,000km.

A third phase is planned for 2026 to update routes covered in the first two phases, providing more recent imagery of locations across the Sultanate.
