Nizwa – Moderate to heavy rains, accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms, struck several wilayats in Dakhliyah and North Sharqiyah on Friday, causing flash floods, power outages and infrastructure damage.
Al Hamra and Bahla were among the hardest hit in Dakhliyah. Strong winds uprooted trees and damaged property, while power outages affected most areas from 6pm Thursday till 8am Friday. The disruption forced residents to seek shelter in nearby towns. Some spent the night outdoors due to lack of electricity in the summer heat.
An official from Dakhliyah Governor’s Office confirmed damage to both private homes and public infrastructure. Namaa Electricity Company carried out emergency repair work overnight, while Al Hamra Municipality, aided by council members and volunteers, worked to reopen blocked roads and remove debris.
In Bahla, the town of Bilad Sait experienced similar conditions. Winds knocked down power poles leading to outages across parts of Bahla. Damage to streetlights, house extensions and private farms was also reported. Wadi Sousa and several surrounding wadis overflowed.
In Mudhaibi in North Sharqiyah, villages in the Samad al Shan area – Al Rawdah, Al Wariyah, Al Masfah and Ba’d – received rain of varying intensity. The downpour caused wadis – including Wadi Ba’d and Wadi al Wariyah – to overflow, disrupting movement and damaging roads.
In Dima Wa al Taien, villages near the eastern Hajar mountains – Mas, Al Sabil, Naqsy and parts of Mahleah – also experienced rain ranging from light to heavy. Several wadis, including Wadi Ham, Wadi Naqsy and Wadi Dima, were reported to be in spate.
Authorities, in coordination with civil defence teams and residents, have launched cleanup and repair activities in all affected areas.
In the wake of the storm, citizens have renewed calls for infrastructure upgrades, including installation of emergency power lines and replacement of wooden poles with iron or concrete structures to withstand extreme weather.
