Muscat – Ramadan offers an opportunity to reassess one’s faith, strengthen character and deepen the connection with Allah through prayer, charity and reflection. In this four-part series, Islamic scholar Hatim Abdul Salem outlines the key practices and principles of the holy month, explaining the meaning and relevance of these in clear and practical terms.

A turning point in life

Fasting in the month of Ramadan is one of the greatest acts of worship prescribed by Allah. It is not merely abstaining from food and drink; it is a powerful spiritual reset, a turning point in a person’s life and a compass that realigns the heart towards the straight path.

One of the unique reasons why self-control becomes so strong during Ramadan is that this worship is performed collectively. Muslims across the world fast, pray and restrain themselves at the same time. This shared commitment creates a powerful moral environment in which goodness is encouraged, temptation is reduced, and believers inspire one another to remain disciplined and mindful of Allah.

Along with this social reinforcement comes a deep awareness of divine reward. Allah has promised immense blessings for those who fast sincerely and strive to do good. This promise strengthens the will, purifies intention and makes self-restraint feel meaningful rather than burdensome.

All these elements – worship, community, accountability and hope for reward – work together to elevate a person’s character. During Ramadan, people naturally return to their fitrah, their pure God-given nature. They speak more gently, behave kindly, and guard their thoughts and actions. Yet the true test comes after Ramadan ends. Those who manage to carry this discipline, awareness and moral clarity beyond the month are the real winners. They have not merely fasted, they have been transformed.
