Muscat – Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) has signed an agreement worth RO44.9mn to develop the Al Mouj Road Project in Seeb and the adjoining section of November 18 Street, aimed at easing traffic congestion and boosting economic activity in the area.
The agreement was signed by H E Saeed bin Hamood al Mawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, and Sheikh Hamed binAbdulqawi al Yafei, CEO of Strabag Oman, the project’s contractor.
According to the ministry, the project will significantly enhance traffic flow and road efficiency, while supporting commercial, tourism and urban development in Muscat governorate.
The scope of work includes adding a third lane in each direction between Muscat InternationalAirport bridge to Al Ishraq Roundabout. A new bridge and four-way traffic signal will be constructed at Al Mouj Roundabout, while Al Bahja Roundabout will be upgraded with an overpass and underpass to streamline vehicle movement.
Additionally, Al Ishraq Roundabout will be converted into a three-way signal junction, with a continuous-flow lane towards Seeb Beach. The project will also cover a third lane fromAl Mouj Roundabout to Al Mawaleh Bridge and two underpasses connecting November 18 Street to Al Mawaleh Bridge.
H E Khamis bin Mohammed al Shamakhi, Undersecretary for Transport, said the project has been redesigned using advanced traffic simulation models in coordination with relevant authorities, including Royal Oman Police, to ensure optimal results.
He added that initial preparations will take around two months, after which construction will begin, with completion expected within 30 months. To minimise disruption, traffic management measures such as diversions and off-peak work schedules will be implemented, with completed sections opened to traffic in stages.
Commenting on related infrastructure plans, H E Shamkhi said a tender for a Muscat Expressway expansion project is also advancing, with key stages of bidding, evaluation and financial approvals nearing completion in coordination with the Projects, Tenders and Local Content Authority.
The Al Mouj Road project is part of MTCIT’s broader strategy to enhance the efficiency and capacity of Muscat’s road network, aligning with Oman’s drive to improve urban mobility and support sustainable growth.
