Muscat – Omani short film Al Majhool (The Unknown), directed by Mohammad al Kindi, has further cemented its international success after winning the Best International Short Film Award at the 30th Rabat International Film Festival for Auteur Cinema in Morocco.
The film drew widespread praise from the festival jury for its compelling narrative, assured direction and striking visual style.
The 20-minute production has been on a remarkable awards run. It recently clinched the Best Film award in the ‘Festival Identity’ category at the Al Batinah International Film Festival 2025, and took home the Best Short Film award at the Asian Independent Film Festival in India. Al Majhool has also been officially selected for screening at the Baghdad Film Festival and the Zambia Short Film Festival.
Oman participated in this year’s Rabat festival as the Guest of Honour, a distinction that celebrated the Omani cinematic movement and highlighted the country’s growing support for cultural and creative industries. Represented by the Oman Film Society, the sultanate’s presence provided a major platform to showcase the rapid development of Omani filmmaking on the global stage.
Al Majhool centres on the mysterious disappearance of a young boy, Moosa, which unsettles a quiet village. Search efforts stretch across the dunes and wadis of Al Hamra, Adam and Sur, yet the child remains missing. What follows is a haunting silence filled with whispers, doubts and unanswered questions. As the narrative unfolds, audiences discover Moosa’s yearning to break free from the ordinary, driven by curiosity and the pull of the unknown.
The film’s growing list of accolades marks another milestone for Oman’s expanding cinematic landscape and underscores the rising calibre of Omani filmmakers. Their dedication — supported by national initiatives and cultural institutions — is enabling Omani productions to compete confidently on international festival circuits.
