Saham – Ministry of Social Development (MoSD) launched the second phase of its ‘Be Distinguished’ sports programme in Saham, North Batinah on Tuesday aimed at developing the skills and confidence of people with disabilities.
The programme brings together government and non-governmental organisations working in rehabilitation and social care to create a safe and inclusive environment for sports and the arts. It seeks to help participants discover their talents, improve physical and mental wellbeing, and promote their integration into society.
Dr Fatima al Fazari, head of the programme’s sports committee, said the new phase focuses on building an integrated training and rehabilitation system that combines health support, physical therapy and skill development. The programme identifies and trains Paralympic athletes in four disciplines – swimming, basketball, goalball and athletics – to prepare them for future local and regional competitions.
The programme includes an arts component designed to nurture talent in fine arts, including drawing, sculpture, design and handicrafts, opening new cultural and creative opportunities for participants.
The launch event featured a presentation outlining the programme’s goals and a performance by members of the Saham Association of Persons with Disabilities, drawing strong engagement from families and attendees.
Fatima said the programme reflects the ministry’s efforts to empower people with disabilities and promote inclusion in line with Oman Vision 2040, which seeks to build a society that ensures equal opportunities for all.
