Sur – Wathiq – a documentary filmmaking camp – opened on Sunday in Sur bringing together over 30 young participants for a hands-on introduction to documentary filmmaking.

Organised by Oman Film Society in cooperation with South Sharqiyah Governor’s Office, the camp will run till August 6. The programme includes intensive workshops on idea development, team formation, screenwriting, cinematography, lighting, direction, editing and colour grading.

The sessions will be led by a group of filmmakers from Oman and abroad, including Bahraini director and producer Sana al Zayani, Egyptian director Hamdi Wahba and Moroccan director Dr Majida Benkirane.

Omani director Anwar al Ruzaiqi, producer Radhi al Khamisi and writer Qaisar bin Salem al Hinai will also conduct sessions.

Participants will also undertake field visits to natural and historical sites across the governorate. These locations will serve as the backdrop for documentaries made during the camp.

Ruzaiqi, Vice-Chairman of the society and Director of Wathiq, said the camp supports the development of documentary filmmaking in Oman. “The goal is to equip young people with the tools to document and showcase the cultural, environmental and social identity of South Sharqiyah,” he said.

Sur was selected for its diverse landscape and cultural depth,  Ruzaiqi added.

Suaad bint Salem al Arimi, Director of the Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-up Office in South Sharqiyah, said the governorate’s support for Wathiq stems from its commitment to creative industries and youth engagement. She noted that the camp aligns with Oman Vision 2040s objectives of cultural empowerment and sustainable development.

She added that participants are encouraged to explore and present social and humanitarian issues from their own perspectives, integrating modern media with storytelling, while reflecting the identity of the place and its people.
