Muscat – The Production and Marketing of Bananas Project in Suwaiq, North Batinah Governorate, is a highly successful venture underpinning Oman’s Food Security goals under Oman Vision 2040. Operating on an area exceeding 267,000 sqm with an investment over RO446,000 , the project is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning and the Ministry of Agricultural Wealth.
The initial phase planted 50,000 seedlings of high-quality varieties, including Lima and G9, with plans to cultivate a total of 80,000 seedlings soon. The project’s current production stands at 50 tonns per month, with an ambitious target of reaching 800 tonns annually by the end of 2027, and eventually 1,400 annual tonns.
The project supervisor, Eng Salim bin Saif al Hatami, confirmed that best agricultural practices, suitable for local conditions, are employed, and seedlings are sourced from local tissue culture laboratories. The final produce is distributed across the local market via commercial centres and specialised companies, supported by extensive logistical chains and cooperation from government bodies, ensuring a consistent supply of high-quality bananas to domestic and overseas markets.
