Muscat – Omani academic Dr Moza bint Ali al Saadi was honoured at the inaugural Unesco Global Citizenship Education Prize 2025 for her initiative ‘Digital Citizenship for Empowered Learners’. She was selected from 154 nominations representing 76 countries. The award was presented on Wednesday at the Unesco headquarters in Paris.
Moza’s initiative, grounded in the conceptual framework developed during her doctoral research, promotes awareness of digital citizenship across all levels of education. It aims to equip learners with the knowledge and skills needed for ethical, safe and responsible use of digital platforms, while linking these principles to national identity.
Moza conducted training workshops for school and university students, curriculum specialists, teachers, supervisors, principals and parents. Her programme also supported public awareness through radio interviews and published articles on digital citizenship.
Funded by South Korea and awarded every two years, the Unesco Global Citizenship Education Prize recognises individuals and institutions preparing young people for responsible civic engagement.
It highlights initiatives that support cultural exchange, participation in public life and digital citizenship, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 4, particularly Target 7, which focuses on education for peace, human rights and global citizenship.
The prize honours two winners – a youth-led organisation and either an individual, institution or non-governmental organisation.
Moza is a senior citizenship specialist at the Ministry of Education. She holds a PhD in Information Studies from Sultan Qaboos University, specialising in digital citizenship practices, and a Master’s degree in Educational Measurement and Evaluation, also from SQU.
Her career includes stints as an English language teacher and as a curriculum developer for identity and citizenship programmes at the ministry. She has also served as a visiting consultant in the Information Studies Department at SQU and as an assistant professor in the Department of Records and Archives Management at A ‘Sharqiyah University.
