Sur – Blending sport, public health advocacy and environmental responsibility, the Sur Elite Cycling Team has launched a series of volunteer initiatives aimed at promoting active lifestyles and raising health awareness across South Sharqiyah.
In comments to Muscat Daily, Mansoor al Araimi, leader of the Sur Elite Cycling Team, said the group is committed to community-oriented initiatives that link physical activity with health and environmental education. “Our goal is to make sport part of daily life while also serving the community through awareness campaigns.”
One of the team’s latest initiatives was a long-distance coastal ride that began in Sur and continued along the shoreline to the Al Tahaim Winter Season venue in Jalan Bani bu Hassan. The event was organised in cooperation with South Sharqiyah Governor’s Office, the Directorate of Heritage and Tourism, and Oman Cancer Association’s South Sharqiyah branch.
The ride formed a part of broader efforts to highlight the role of physical activity in preventing chronic diseases, encouraging people of all ages to adopt regular exercise and consider cycling as a healthy, environmentally friendly mode of transport. Awareness messages during the event focused on healthy lifestyles and the importance of early disease prevention.
The cyclists passed several coastal landmarks, including Ras al Hadd, the villages of Al Ruwais, Al Suwaih and Asilah, as well as Al Ashkharah in Jalan Bani Bu Ali, before concluding the ride at Al Tahaim. The scenic route added a tourism dimension to the initiative, showcasing the area’s diverse coastal and environmental attractions.
The event also featured distribution of educational leaflets on cancer prevention, diabetes and obesity risks, and the role of exercise in improving overall wellbeing. Tourism brochures highlighting South Sharqiyah’s attractions were also shared, combining health awareness with destination promotion.
Beyond cycling, the team undertook environmental campaigns, including aflaj cleanliness drives in the Mibam area of Wadi Tiwi and in Al Hadaq. These efforts focused on raising awareness on preserving aflaj as both a vital water resource and an important cultural heritage.
Araimi said the team plans to continue organising social and volunteer campaigns that promote sport, public health and environmental protection. “We believe community sports teams can play a wider role – not only in fitness, but in building awareness and encouraging positive lifestyle changes,” he added.
