Nizwa – Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology has commenced work on dualisation of the Izki-Nizwa Road, a key infrastructure development stretching 32.2km across Dakhliyah.

Starting from Qarut Roundabout in Izki, the road passes through Birkat al Mouz and ends in the Farkh area of Nizwa. The project is valued at RO47mn.

The scope of work includes construction of roundabouts, intersections with signals and a vehicle underpass to ease traffic flow. Existing surface crossings will be replaced with box culverts to ensure uninterrupted passage, particularly when wadis overflow.

Salem bin Hamad al Jenaibi, Director of Roads Department in Dakhliyah, described the project as critical for improving road safety and traffic efficiency. He said the dual carriageway would enhance connectivity between towns and wilayats, including Izki and Jabal Akhdar.

Jenaibi noted that the upgraded road will support the transport of agricultural and industrial goods and contribute to economic development of the governorate.

Current construction activities include mountain cutting, concrete works for wadi channels and road levelling. The road will feature concrete and steel barriers, traffic signs, road markings, reflectors and lighting.

Additional elements include a dual carriageway linking Izki city centre to Sultan Thuwayni bin Said Road, 3km of service roads and rehabilitation of an 800m access to Jabal Akhdar.

The ministry said the project is expected to ease congestion in high-traffic zones such as Birkat al Mouz and Farkh, while supporting tourism, commerce and investment, in line with Oman’s national goals of economic diversification and sustainable development.
