Muscat – Oman Film Society (OFS), in collaboration with Sony Middle East and Africa, organised a specialised workshop titled ‘Thinking Like a Cinematographer’ last week, led by cinematographer Hassan Amin, as part of its ongoing efforts to raise cinematic awareness and improve professional practices in filmmaking.
The workshop explored a range of intellectual and practical themes, beginning with the concept of cinematic identity and self-awareness. Participants were encouraged to reflect on key questions such as their professional direction, creative purpose and the changes they seek to achieve in their careers. Discussions also highlighted the importance of continuous learning, professional fulfilment and the risks associated with stagnation in a rapidly evolving industry.
Storytelling was underscored as the foundation of filmmaking, with the session examining its role in building emotional impact, trust and effective communication across both creative and commercial content. The workshop outlined the stages of digital storytelling, from idea development and research to writing, planning, execution, evaluation and audience engagement.
Amin addressed the balance between creativity and professionalism, noting that success in filmmaking extends beyond artistic talent to include strong client relations, professional commitment, reputation-building and delivering value beyond cost. Client satisfaction, he stressed, remains essential for sustainability and growth.
The session further examined the impact of technological advancements and artificial intelligence on the film industry, urging filmmakers to keep pace with emerging tools and avoid reliance on outdated methods. Examples of recent technological shifts that have reshaped visual professions were also discussed.
The workshop concluded with a focus on professional growth, emphasising collaboration, investment in skills development and translating theoretical knowledge into practical application to meet market demands.
The event attracted strong participation from cinematographers, content creators and film enthusiasts, reflecting the society and Sony’s commitment to delivering high-quality training programmes that support the development of the film industry in Oman.
