Muscat – Seven health centres in Oman were recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) as Patient Safety Friendly Primary Health Care Institutions during a ceremony held on Wednesday at the Ministry of Health’s headquarters.
The event was held under the patronage of H E Dr Ahmed bin Salem Al Mandhari, Undersecretary of Health Planning and Regulation. It was attended by Dr Jean Jabbour, WHO Representative in Oman; Dr Qamra bint Saeed Al Sariri, Director General of the Quality Assurance Center; directors general from various governorates; and heads of primary healthcare institutions and quality departments that participated in the 2025 evaluation.
The recognition forms part of efforts to strengthen a culture of patient safety and enhance the quality of healthcare services across the sultanate. The evaluation assessed healthcare institutions’ compliance with internationally approved standards aimed at ensuring a safe care environment, reducing risks and incidents, and promoting active engagement of patients and healthcare professionals within the patient safety system.
In his address, H E Dr Mandhari underscored the importance of implementing the Patient Safety Framework to support the quality of health services. He said that adherence to these standards reflects the Ministry of Health’s commitment to developing the healthcare system and raising the standard of services provided to the community.
Dr Qamra highlighted the concept of the Patient Safety Friendly Primary Care Initiative, outlining the approved evaluation mechanism and the key focus areas targeted by the programme. She noted that implementation of the framework has had a tangible positive impact in enhancing patient safety and improving the quality of care across primary healthcare institutions.
The seven centres recognised are Wattayah and Mawaleh Health Centres in Muscat governorate; Al Akhdar and Yanqul Health Centres in Dhahirah governorate; Awqad and Al Dhahariz Health Centres in Dhofar governorate; and Al Qabil Health Centre in North Sharqiyah governorate.
This group represents the first primary healthcare institutions in Oman to be evaluated under the Patient Safety-Friendly Primary Care framework. The initiative marks a significant step by the Ministry of Health in strengthening quality and safety practices and promoting the adoption of international standards, contributing to the development of a safer and more efficient healthcare system in the sultanate.
