Muscat – Muscat Municipality has stepped up efforts to curb illegal dumping in vacant residential plots, launching a public awareness campaign that highlights the practice’s impact on health, hygiene and the capital’s image.

The municipality warned that random disposal of waste in open plots leads to foul odours, attracts insects and rodents, and creates an unhealthy environment for nearby residents. Such practices, it said, run counter to ongoing initiatives to keep Muscat clean and orderly.

According to the municipality, waste dumped in vacant land can quickly turn into breeding grounds for pests, particularly during warmer months, raising the risk of disease. In some cases, illegally discarded materials may include hazardous waste that can affect soil and groundwater quality, in addition to posing fire hazards.

As part of the campaign, residents, businesses and property owners are being urged to dispose of waste through approved municipal channels. Owners of vacant plots have been advised to fence their properties and monitor their land regularly to prevent misuse.

The campaign is being promoted through social media and community outreach programmes aimed at raising public awareness on proper waste management. The municipality stressed that maintaining cleanliness is a shared civic duty and essential for sustainable urban living.

It also reiterated that violations of waste disposal regulations can result in fines and other penalties, as authorities seek to deter behaviour that defiles public spaces.

Muscat Municipality called on the public to support the initiative by using designated waste bins, arranging bulk waste collection when needed and reporting illegal dumping. Collective commitment, it noted, will help preserve the city’s appearance, safeguard public health and ensure a safe environment for residents and visitors alike.
