Muscat – The upcoming National Library, a key part of the Oman Cultural Complex, is set to become the cornerstone of the sultanate’s efforts to preserve its intellectual and cultural legacy. The library, currently under construction, will occupy 23,500sqm and stand alongside the National Theatre and the National Records and Archives Authority within the complex.

Dr Musa al Mufarji, Supervisor of the National Library project, said it is designed to serve as a repository of Omani works and a guardian of national intellectual output in both traditional and digital forms. “The library aims to collect, organise and make accessible Omani intellectual production to all segments of society, helping preserve national memory and strengthen cultural identity,” he said.

Mufarji explained that the library will include all publications, official documents, academic research and dissertations related to Oman, as well as records of conferences and seminars focused on the sultanate. It will function as a comprehensive reference for researchers and those interested in the country’s history and culture.

A separate building will house a children’s library to promote reading and awareness of national identity among younger generations. It will feature a wide collection of books, educational materials and cultural activities designed to foster a love of reading and learning from an early age.

In line with its academic and research role, the National Library will include reading halls for students and scholars, offering an environment conducive to study and research. It will also feature specialised departments, including Manuscripts and Rare Books, Omani and Arabian Peninsula Studies, and a section dedicated to studies on the imams and sultans of Oman. Reference services for printed and digital encyclopaedic works will further support academic inquiry.

Omani libraries have long played a central role in the nation’s intellectual development. From early public and private libraries to modern digital repositories, these have served as bridges connecting Oman’s past with its present and future. The National Library is expected to build on this legacy, ensuring that knowledge, culture and national identity continue to thrive in the generations ahead.
