Muscat – The National Museum has recorded another year of steady institutional growth, expanding international engagement and announcing an ambitious slate of heritage initiatives and overseas exhibitions for 2026.
Speaking during the museum’s annual media briefing in Muscat on Tuesday, Jamal bin Hassan al Mousawi, Secretary-General of the National Museum, underscored the institution’s pivotal role as custodian of national heritage and a dynamic platform for cultural dialogue.
He stated that throughout 2025, the museum achieved a series of strategic milestones that further consolidated its position as a bridge for cultural and museum exchange between Oman and an expanding network of regional and international museums and cultural institutions.
The museum received approximately 39 official visits during the year, reflecting its growing standing not only within cultural circles but also on the diplomatic front.
The museum organised 22 local and international exhibitions. These initiatives form part of a broader strategy to stimulate museum activity, strengthen knowledge exchange and deepen collaboration with leading global institutions.
By the end of December 2025, the total number of visitors exceeded 131,000, underscoring sustained public engagement and growing community outreach.
As part of its digital transformation efforts, the museum introduced a new Audio Guide service designed to enrich the visitor experience. The service offers interpretive commentary on selected galleries and artefacts in both Arabic and English, with dedicated accessibility features to support visitors with disabilities.
Al Mousawi announced a number of high-profile international engagements scheduled for 2026. These include the Oman Hall at the State Hermitage Museum in Russia, as well as Oman Day exhibitions and related cultural events at the National Historical Museum of Belarus.
The Secretary-General also highlighted upcoming heritage initiatives, notably the Oman Post House project and the Muscat Wall project, both aimed at preserving and revitalising significant components of the nation’s historic urban and cultural fabric.
In a milestone achievement, Al Mousawi confirmed that the Omanisation rate at the museum has reached 100% across both permanent and temporary roles, including highly specialised museum positions. Approximately 40% of these roles are held by residents of Muscat governorate.
