Muscat – The Food Safety and Quality Centre at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has launched a nationwide initiative urging cafes and coffee shops across the sultanate to gradually reduce sugar levels in tea and coffee beverages, in line with efforts to promote healthier lifestyles and balanced nutrition.
The campaign carrying the message ‘Together we create a more conscious cafe environment and a healthier society’, calls on licensed outlets to adopt a phased approach to lowering the amount of sugar added to hot drinks, encouraging moderation without compromising customer satisfaction or sales. The move aligns with national health priorities aimed at curbing excessive sugar consumption and mitigating the risks associated with obesity and diabetes.
According to the centre, reducing sugar content is unlikely to negatively affect sales. On the contrary, it may help attract a growing segment of health-conscious consumers. A gradual reduction strategy is also expected to lower operating costs over time by decreasing overall sugar usage, it said.
Cafes participating in the programme will be featured on a list of ‘health-friendly cafes’, enhancing their reputation as socially responsible businesses that contribute to community wellbeing. The initiative is also designed to strengthen customer trust and foster long-term loyalty through sustainable, health-oriented practices.
Officials stressed that the programme supports national efforts to reduce daily sugar intake and encourage informed dietary choices. By taking part, cafes can help transform the campaign from a short-term measure into a lasting behavioural shift within society.
The centre has invited interested businesses to register through its website or contact 98588667 during official working hours for further information.
