Salalah – A recommendation to establish a unified digital platform linking projects to competencies and supply chains, along with a national engineering empowerment programme for Omani youth, was made at the conclusion of the 4th Salalah Engineering Forum on Monday.
Organised by Oman Society of Engineers in collaboration with Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, the two-day forum brought together experts and specialists in engineering, logistics and supply chain.
Among its key recommendations, the forum called for a digital platform based on accurate data to enhance efficiency and reduce bottlenecks, a youth-focused empowerment programme, and introduction of value engineering as a mandatory standard in major projects to ensure optimal returns and reduce change orders.
The forum also urged investment in artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) to improve efficiency, cut costs and integrate digital risk management into supply chains.

Sustainability featured prominently in the discussions, with recommendations for a roadmap for green aviation and sustainable transport. This included sustainable aviation fuel, green hydrogen, solar-powered airports and ports, supportive legislation, and accelerated renewable energy projects in the transport and logistics sectors.
Other proposals focused on expanding logistics connectivity with China, India, East Africa, Korea, the US and Yemen through multimodal shipping solutions. The forum further suggested forming a National Council for Sustainable Engineering and Logistics with representation from the public and private sectors and academia to guide innovation, develop skills and set policies.
Sessions highlighted the importance of institutional integration, governance, renewable energy sustainability and empowering national talent. Participants stressed the logistics sector’s role in diversifying Oman’s economy and enhancing integration of engineering and innovation to boost supply chain efficiency, cut costs and enhance Oman’s competitiveness in regional and global markets.
